What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is basically a clear aligner therapy where, instead of using brackets and metal wires, you have clear aligners that are designed to move your teeth. We do use some small attachments on your teeth so the aligner trays can grab onto them and move your teeth toward the planned positions so you can function well and your teeth look great.
How does Invisalign compare to traditional braces?
That's a great question. As the name suggests, Invisalign is a clear aligner therapy that's much less noticeable than traditional braces. It's also easier to clean your teeth during the process, and brushing, flossing, and eating can be more manageable compared with traditional braces, where you're dealing with metal wires and brackets.
With traditional braces, plaque and food can accumulate around the brackets and wires, so it can be more difficult to keep everything clean. One key difference, though, is that Invisalign is for people who know they can be committed to wearing those trays. We recommend wearing them for about 22 hours a day. With traditional braces, you don't have to worry about remembering to put trays in and take them out. That's one of the key differences between the two options.
Is Invisalign faster than traditional braces?
The answer is not necessarily. It depends on the kind of correction we are looking at. Typically, it all starts with what you really want in terms of your smile. If we are just addressing straighter teeth or only certain areas, especially in the front, then Invisalign could be faster. But again, the answer is that it depends on the patient.
How long does Invisalign take to straighten teeth?
It could be as little as six months, or it could take 16 to 18 months, depending on the difficulty or the alignment issues we are dealing with. The treatment time can be comparable to traditional braces and, in some cases, faster.
What is the process involved in Invisalign treatment?
Basically, it starts with taking good scans and records of your teeth. Then we get clear aligners fabricated through Invisalign, and we place small attachments on your teeth. They're tooth-colored, and they help the aligners create different types of tooth movement, such as rotating, intruding, or extruding the teeth.
Once we have all the records and your aligners are ready, we place those attachments on your teeth and then you start treatment. Sometimes we also have to create a very small amount of space between certain teeth to help move them into the right positions. Depending on the case, techniques like this can sometimes help create the space needed for treatment without removing teeth.
What are the requirements for Invisalign treatment?
One of the requirements is that Invisalign does require you to wear your trays very faithfully for about 22 hours a day, including nighttime. The main times we recommend removing the Invisalign trays are when you're eating, brushing, or flossing. Other than that, you need to have the trays on.
Is there anything that could disqualify me from using Invisalign?
